What the Experts Say - Creating a Best Practices Vision Care Benefit

What the experts have to say about gaps in vision care.

Optometrists Dr. Kim Bugera and Dr. Andrea Lasby are prominent figures in the field of vision care. In a recent webinar hosted by the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), they addressed numerous inquiries from advisors and insurers regarding vision care. The webinar covered topics including common eye diseases in Canada, the importance of screening and diagnostic imaging, comprehensive exams, existing gaps in vision care, and how to fill them.

Did You Know?

Early detection of eye disease can prevent over 90% of vision loss in Canada?

20% of Canadians have an eye disease that may lead to blindness or result in reduced productivity and increased absenteeism?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, affects 30% of the population, and this is projected to increase to 50% by 2050?

Ocular Surface Disease, also known as dry eye disease, is associated with increased absenteeism, presenteeism, depression, and anxiety?

What About Group Vision Care Coverage?

According to Dr. Bugera and Dr. Lasby, most group vision care plans do not cover today’s clinical standards of care. There are gaps in coverage for screening and diagnostic imaging, and partial follow-up examinations for those who need them. These are critical for the diagnosis and monitoring of serious eye diseases and the detection of other serious health conditions.

The Take Aways

Attendee evaluations told us that CAOs message is being received loud and clear. The top three takeaways from the session were:

  1. There is insufficient coverage under benefit plans.
  2. The importance of prevention and early detection through regular eye exams and additional testing.
  3. The need for education and awareness for employers and employees on vision health and vision care services.

Almost 90% of evaluation respondents told us that if they or their clients had the option, they would, without a doubt, recommend improvements in comprehensive vision exam coverage to include diagnostics and imaging, as well as recall examinations within 24 months for some people.

This is a clear message to insurers that there is a demand to expand vision care coverage. By prioritizing changes to their vision care offerings, insurers and advisors can provide plan sponsors with options that align with the current clinical standards of vision care.
